Rome 16 October 1943

Laing, Sarah

Notes
From the short story by Giacomo Debenedetti.
At dusk on Friday, 15 October 1943, from across the river comes a woman dressed in black, dishevelled, sodden with rain, too overwrought to speak. She comes to deliver a warning of what the dawn will bring.
Giacomo Debenedetti was in Rome on that day. He had gone into hiding with his family in central Italy, but was on a chance return visit.
