Whina Cooper has been the most visible and controversial Maori leader of her time. Born in an earth-floor whare, she became a teacher, a gum digger, a rugby coach, a champion rifle shot, a tribal leader, foundation president of the Maori Women's Welfare League and leader of the Maori land march. She organised her first public protest at the age of 18 and she welcomed an international audience to the XIV Commonwealth Games in her 95th year.
