The twentieth century opened with women still fighting for the vote. During the first World War they proved that they were equal to men at work. After the war, women won the vote at last. Mass unemployment drove them back to their traditional roles as wives and mothers. During the second World War women again took over men's jobs and thousands joined the armed forces.
