Costly Gold: Clutha Riches And Their Human Toll

MURRAY, J. S. & R. W.

Notes
The miners and their families paid a heavy price for extracting gold from the Clutha. There was backbreaking, heartbreaking, mindless toil, often for no reward; hazards and hardships of travel; high mortality from floods, from extremes of climate, from men of violence and greed. Robbers and swindlers, illness and accident all took their toll. There are also many stories of human courage, endurance and compassion.
