A good keen man (1960): Set against the rugged beauty of the New Zealand back country, this is the tale of a young man's introduction to the art of deer culling and follows the exploits of a good keen man as he learns the skills necessary to become a good bushman.
Bullock Creek (1989): Barney Carter - returns to his old stamping-ground in the high-country of the Southern Alps and meets up with a bunch of hard and colourful merino sheep-farmers. Barney wins their respect and they accept him by bestowing upon him a nickname that will stick to him for the rest of his life. He takes up the challenge of wintering it out on Bullock Creek Station,on the bleak slopes of the Barker Range, and has to use all his knowledge, experience, ingenuity and luck to get himself and the widow and the stock alive through the worst winter on record. There's a bit of skulduggery going on and The Doughroaster deals with it in his own unique and entertaining way.
Gold and greenstone (1993): Sally could do most things better than men, but it was difficult to get a job in a recession. On the road and looking for work she involuntarily teams up with an unlikely character and finds herself on the end of a shovel on the West Coast. A unique story unfolds of hard work and dreams, of gold fever and greenstone, of helicopters and high-seas, of laughter and tears and culminates with a romantic twist and a happy ending.
Wild pork and watercress (1986 - filmed as Hunt for the Wilderpeople): A tale of raw adventure as Uncle Hec and Ricky use all their skills to survive in the hard world of precipitous hills and impassable forest. It uncovers the slow maturing of love and trust between two loners in a hard world.
Puha Road (1982): If the handle of spade was going to break; if the tree was going to come back down across the car; if they were going to close just before you got there; if the tractor was going to back through the fence into the boss's wife's ornamental goldfish-pond; if the paint was going to get split on the poodle - it always had to happen when Muxy was around. In fact it's hard to imagine how this Muxy could ever be even remotely successful at anything - but his good luck is as devastating as the bad.
